Not today—no tongue’s sprung tangle, no throng
of thought-thrift flung on the page’s pale field;
mind’s mill stands still, its whorl unwound, unstrung,
the ink uninstressed, the inward yield unsealed.
O hush of it!—the hoard I had would harrow
and hurry to hymn, now harbored, held, and hid;
my heart’s hived honey, slow in its narrow
comb, keeps—nor breaks to bless the busy grid.
What want I? Want of want: a will’s unweather,
a wit wind-worn, worn thin of wing and word;
sprung rhythm slackens, slips its sprungy tether—
no bright-breath bract, no bird-call’s counter-chord.
Yet mark: the more by not, the more is given—
a day unposted posts its praise to heaven.
