I hate to praise commercials for their poetic qualities, but I’m not afraid to, so that’s why today I want to bring this 17-second Old Spice spot to your attention. Watch this:
What’s that our shirtless friend is saying? Here’s the text:
Ladies, can I take you to the freshest of distant cultures? No, but Komodo can, and it will, and I will too. So will you? I hope so. I know so. Ice cream? Okay.
The question is, how might you put that into verse form? Here’s mine:
Ladies,
can I take you
to the freshest
of distant
cultures?
No,
but Komodo can,
and it will
and I will
too.
So
will
you?
I hope so.
I know so.
Ice
cream?
Okay.
Maybe this isn’t the most meaningful poem, or even all that fun to read. Surely the line breaks could be improved. But I would argue that what it lacks in poetry, it makes up for in questionable brand messaging.
