About Us

Hello! We are a traditional bookstore selling mostly new books. We also have a residency program, a sometimes-art gallery, and a social space geared towards kids. You can find our hours listed below.

If you want to get to know us more, read this nice post by Amy.

Our Mission

(a work in progress)

Snowfort is a family-operated independent bookstore focused on small presses, offering literary and arts-centered programs that nurture creativity and community among North Country children, teens, and adults—as well as writers nationwide.

Getting Here

How to get here

You’ll find Snowfort just off the main drag in Westport, New York, on the western shore of Lake Champlain, where the Adirondacks meet the Champlain Valley.

By car, we’re just:

  • 40 minutes from Lake Placid
  • 1 hour from Burlington, Vermont (via the Lake Champlain ferry)
  • 1 hour 45 minutes from Albany International Airport
  • about 2 hours from Drawn & Quarterly in Montréal
  • about 4½ hours from New York City

Nearby favorites:

  • A 5-minute walk from The Mill
  • 12 minutes from Essex Farm
  • 15 minutes from the ferry to Burlington, Vermont

By train

Take Amtrak to Westport (WSP), one of the most scenic rail journeys in North America. The station is just a few minutes from the bookstore.

By ferry

Coming from Vermont? The Lake Champlain ferry from Burlington to Essex makes for one of the most beautiful approaches to the Adirondacks. From the ferry landing, Snowfort is about 15 minutes away.

Whether you’re making a weekend in the Adirondacks, taking the train up the Hudson, crossing Lake Champlain by ferry, or road-tripping between Montréal and New York, Snowfort makes an easy stop—and, we hope, a memorable destination.
